Green Affordable home

As a person who has lived for many years on a low income myself, I find it interesting that a $125,000 mortgage would be considered "affordable" to a low-income person. Think how long it would take someone making $12,000 or $15,000 or even $20,000 to pay off that mortgage.

Not to detract in any way from this effort to provide an energy-efficient home -- but just to point out that we (collectively) are stuck in old paradigms. Even after the housing foreclosure crisis, we are still thinking it's an OK idea for a household of modest means to take on $100,000+ debt.

Another interesting thing to notice is that the energy-efficient features don't seem to extend to the yard and landscape. Even without fancy insulation and other high-tech energy-efficiency features, it's easy to increase the energy-efficiency of a house just by a well-placed hedge or trellis. Or greenhouse/shadehouse porch. Also, why a concrete driveway rather than mulch or other natural permeable matter? (Maybe this driveway is made of permeable pavement?)

Good roof overhangs on this house though, for sure! Roof overhangs are an extremely important feature for energy-efficiency in hot sunny places. Never underestimate the value of good roof overhangs.
