Seaholm Design Competition and Sustainability Action Agenda

Adaptive Reuse Design Competition. Today we are announcing a design competition for a very exciting opportunity to re-envision historic infrastructure buildings that are situated directly overlooking Ladybird Lake and our highly traveled hike and bike trail. The competition flyer is below and attached, and competition rules can be found at www.austintexas.gov/seaholm-intake  This highly visible, highly trafficked site holds great promise to demonstrate and educate sustainability, and re-imagine sustainable infrastructure for our City.

Seaholm EcoDistrict Initiative. The buildings that are the focus of the design competition above, are part of a much larger Seaholm District. The city's Office of Sustainability is applying the Portland Sustainability Institute’s EcoDIstrict framework across this large neighborhood on the edge of downtown. Their team participated last year in the EcoDistrict Institute along with 9 other cities. The project includes our new Downtown Library by Lake Flato, a large adaptive reuse of the Seaholm Powerplant, significant new mixed use development and downtown housing, and many existing neighborhood residents and tenants. Sustainability Action Agenda. With the desire to create a single communications and tracking tool for the city's far-flung efforts, the Office of Sustainability created a 40-point Sustainability Action Agenda. The Agenda is organized around 10 major sustainability themes, with four major innovation areas related to each. Attached is an info-graphic that outlines the Agenda, a public outreach tool using simple language that includes 40 citizen “call to action” statements. They track over 180 distinct projects within this Action Agenda.

Climate Leadership Award. The City of Austin was pleased to receive a 2013 Climate Leadership Award from the EPA, the Climate Registry, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, and Association of Climate Change Officers. “The 2013 Climate Leadership Award winners are leading the way on integrating climate response into their organizational culture,” said Daniel Kreeger, ACCO executive director. “The winners are not only exemplary corporate, organizational, and individual leaders, but their actions provide a blueprint to catalyze the efforts of other organizations and individuals.” For more see http://www.austintexas.gov/news/city-austin-wins-climate-leadership-award
