August Green Drinks Austin
Bob Metcalfe invented Ethernet and now he wants to help make Austin a better Silicon Valley, without letting it lose its weirdness of course. Join us on Aug 28th for the Austin Green Drinks and NetImpact Happy Hour to hear him talk.
Brought to you by: Austin Green Drinks (www.austingreendrinks.org) and NetImpact Austin
Where: Opal Divine’s (West Sixth Street) at 6pm on Tuesday August 28th
Who is welcome: Everyone who is interested in things green and wants to meet others with similar interests. Austin Green Drinks Happy Hours creates opportunities to meet with other accomplished environmental, sustainability, and clean tech professionals in an informal atmosphere; after all, that is where the greatest ideas are born. We attract professionals who routinely initiate innovative ways to meet the challenges of a sustainable future.
Our Special Guest for the Evening: Bob Metcalfe is a Professor of Innovation and Murchison Fellow of Free Enterprise at The University of Texas at Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering. In 1973, Bob invented Ethernet and in 2010 1.2 billion Ethernet ports were shipped worldwide. As an entrepreneur Bob founded 3Com Corporation, the billion-dollar networking company where at various times he held the role of Chairman, CEO, division general manager, and vice president of engineering, sales, and marketing. He is a Venture Partner at Polaris Ventures and serves on the boards of Polaris-backed start-ups in enertech including 1366 Technologies, Infinite Power Solutions, SiOnyx, and Sun Catalytix. Bob’s new mission is to help make Austin a better Silicon Valley, still weird of course, with live music. Bob will talk about the Internet lessons that could be used to solve the world’s energy problem. He believes cheap and clean energy is what we need, in squanderable abundance. Just like what the Internet did for bandwidth. Energy conservation and efficiency are not bad things, but they’re not the long term solution.
