Green Initiatives Director
Foundation Communities (FC) is a nationally-recognized nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing and the tools low- and moderate-income families need to increase their educational and economic standing. We have made great strides in reducing our carbon footprint and addressing other green priorities. We are seeking an entrepreneurial, self motivated, green leader to continue deepening our impact.
Key initiatives:
In our effort to be a -innovative organization setting precedents for others, we expect this position to develop innovative new projects. Some ongoing initiatives and responsibilities include:
Green Capital Improvements- Consult with FC’s Asset Manager on an annual basis about improving FC’s existing facilities to be more energy, water, and resource efficient. Projects are managed collaboratively with the Asset Manager and onsite staff with the Green Initiatives Director being responsible for implementing associated rebates, hiring contractors, overseeing quality of work, and benchmarking and measuring project effectiveness. Provide green expertise to design of new construction developments.
Staff Education and Training- Provide continuing education for property managers, lead maintenance and senior property management staff through monthly seminars on green topics. On an annual basis, provide training for any new property management staff that satisfies the Credential for Green Property Management through the National Affordable Housing Management Association. Educate our administrative staff about conservation at the work place by developing and auditing “best practices”, newsletters, and monthly tips.
Resident Green Programs- Oversee our nationally recognized behavior based program, Saving Green (SG). Work directly with staff, residents, and partners to provide access to healthy food through gardening on site. Oversee volunteer ‘green’ projects.
Utility Management- Oversee utility consumption data, work with utility providers, assist property management staff in reviewing their utility data during budgeting and helping set conservation goals, manually update accounts, analyze unusual utility bills and usage patterns, and other property specific utility projects. Monthly tracking and maintenance as needed of solar PV arrays.
Compliance, Reporting, Policy work: Ensure our properties are in compliance with local energy, water, and waste ordinances or restrictions. Ensure we adhere to NeighborWorks America Green Designation and Austin Green Business Leader Program. Maintain a healthy relationship with local utility providers. Engage on strategic policy issues.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• This position currently supervises a team of two other staff members. Strong supervisory skills are a plus.
• Project management skills are essential for capital improvement projects
• Many of our green initiatives are grant funded, therefore an ability to pursue grant funding, report to donors, and maintain great funder relationships is key.
• Entrepreneurial ability to develop and manage new initiatives.
• Knowledge and experience in green building practices, utility management and conservation projects is required.
• Excellent presentation, writing and communication skills. Excellent ability to coordinate and work effectively with all departments. Excellent customer service skills.
• Computer skills include proficiency in Microsoft Office, technical understanding of utility management software and benchmarking, and knowledge of Access databases.
Education and Credentials: Degree(s) in architecture, engineering, environmental science or other related field. Two or more years experience in energy/water/resource conservation and/or building operations and/or experience in behavior based conservation methods. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate Non-profit and work associated with development and/or property management a plus.
Physical demands: May work in all weather conditions, work in extreme temperatures, and may work around standard office conditions with repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Use of manual dexterity may include, climbing of stairs, climbing of ladders, lifting and moving.
